Working party

The Working Party usually meets on the first Wednesday of the month, starting from the car park at 9.30am. Everyone is welcome to join us.

Heavy work

Most of the major works have been done but the valley needs regular maintenance. We have our own supply of tools - just wear old clothes. Some of the work is heavy but there are always 'light' alternatives.

Our schedule is fairly flexible, and the activities for each meeting vary according to what needs to be done around the park. We paint the seats and the noticeboards, plant bulbs, cut back shrubs, clear up litter, dig drains, repair footpaths, clear the brook, in fact anything that needs doing. Our working parties: very rewarding work in good company.

Please join us if you can at 9.30am in the car park - all tools are provided.

Variety

Here is a diary of what was achieved in the first months of 2003. There is plenty more work to be done - why not join us?

January Sunday 15th: trees and shrubs along the leat were cleared ready for the digger which dredged the leat on 12th February.

February Sunday 16th: cleared the meadow of debris left by the Christmas tree shredding. Put a new board in No 5 sluice. Filled in a leak at the far end of the pond. Removed ivy overhanging the brook. Picked up litter.

March Wednesday 5th: put up three new bird boxes. Spread the soil around Malcolm's scrape. Planted flag iris, purple loosetrife and water avens. Picked up litter. Kingfisher seen.
Sunday 16th: filled in hole that had appeared by pond dipping edge. Cleared brook beyond No 6 sluice. Picked up litter.

April Wednesday 2nd: planted more round Malcolm's scrape. Cleared dam in Everglades. Picked up a lot of litter. Cut down blackberry and blackthorn growth on Butterfly Bank and used cuttings and other material to block path around the back of the pond.

Sunday Working Parties

Every third Sunday in the month for many years, John White, and his loyal helper Sheila Winlo worked on many different jobs in the park - the sort of jobs that make the valley look as if someone cares about it. The idea was always that the Wednesday group was for the retired or those who were free but the Sunday group would give those who worked during the week the chance to do their bit for the maintenance of the park. Sadly John and Sheila waited in vain for more volunteers so they decided to finish the Sunday Working Parties. We will not be losing them - they will be turning out on Wednesdays.

Our helpers do such good work down the valley - we thank them all,
