Stuck for an idea about where to go for an afternoon? Here are some ideas
about places to visit - and they are all FREE.
The Meadows are open all year round. The ferry will take you across
from Sandy Lane Paddling Pool from March to September. Ron, the ferryman,
starts at 10.30am at weekends and Bank Holidays. He is contracted to finish
at 4.30pm but he stays around if the weather is fine. The ferry costs
50p each way for an adult. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the landing
stage on the medows bank has been vandalised which means the ferry service
has been suspended.
Rivacre Ellesmere Port
A Cheshire County Council Country Park with a Rangers' Cabin and toilets.
It is at least twice as big as Caldy Valley with a stream, woods, meadows,
trees to climb Come off the M53 at Junction 7, take the first exit on
the roundabout, carry straight on until after half a mile you come to
a brown sign to Rivacre pointing down a road on the right.
Little Budworth Country Park
This is a splendid example of lowland heathland. Take the A54 past
Kelsall, turn right at the traffic lights when you come to the A49 and
the park is very soon down a road on the left.
Primrose Hill
This is part of the Sandstone Trail, a 51km walk from Frodsham to
Whitchurch with stunning views over Cheshire and beyond. At the top of
the Kelsall bypass, past Morreys on your left, there is a car park hidden
in the woods on the right hand side If you come to the A54 turnoff, you've
missed it.
Canal footpath
Have you walked or cycled along the towpath recently? The footpath
alongside the canal all the way from the centre of Chester to Canal Bridge,
Christleton has been resurfaced and is a pleasure to use. There is a sloping
access from Tarvin Bridge and steps down from the A4 1. Going in the other
direction, past the four deep Northgate locks, you come to the much improved
Canal Basin. If you feel like a long journey, carry on past Blacon and
you will eventually come to the Boat Museum.
Wepre Park
This park is 160 acres hidden in Connahs Quay. It is run by Flintshire
Countryside Services and there are meadows, woodland, an excellent play
area and a Visitors Centre. At the top of the site is Ewloe Castle. If
you take the A55 as far as the A548 junction and then carry on along the
coast road until you come to the traffic lights in Connahs Quay. There
is a sign post to Wepre sending you up the road to the left, then after
1 mile, you will find the park on the left.
