Countryside Day 2001

On Sunday 9th September we celebrated our tenth birthday, complete with birthday cake. A large crowd gathered to watch the cutting of the cake and enjoyed the activities laid on for them to try out.

There was a guest appearance by an endangered rhinoceros. Robin Chambers, who lives locally, was raising sponsorship money before travelling toAmerica to take part in the New York Marathon on Sunday 4th November. All sponsorship money raised has gone toward saving the rhino from extinction. Robin successfully completed the course and has very kindly written about his exploits for us. Congratulations Robin.

The Friends' tent housed an exhibition of photographs of the valley over the last ten years showing how it had changed. There was also work done by local artists illustrated. Visitors were invited to comment on the designs. These comments helped us make the final decision as to what sculpture to commission to make signs for four entrances to the park. The chosen sculptures were unvelied as part of the Chester Festival of Trees on 30th November.

The most unexpected event on Countryside Day was not part of the celebrations at all. A surprised group of onlookers were treated to the rare sight of a heron enjoying a squirrel for its meal. We have pictures to prove it.
