Countryside Day 2005

Countryside Day 2005 took place on Sunday 11 September.

There were lots of environmental activites and games for children to do. They enjoyed a Punch and Judy show with a special environmental theme, pond dipping, making butterflies, fish kites, leaf painting, a picture quiz around the park as well as getting their face painted, trying their hand at boules and finding out about the water vole, one of the country's highly endangered species which makes its home in the park.

You know how something seems a good idea at the time ...

Well, months ago when I agreed to organise Countryside Day, it didn't seem too much of a problem. I had been involved for years, I knew most of the volunteers and having sorted out a few last minute hiccups, everything seemed fine.

Then I arrived at the park at 11am with my first load of tables.. Four lonely individuals stood on the damp field. At this point my heart sank. Fourtunately by the time I returned fifteen minutes later, everything was in full swing. The tent and Punch & Judy had arrived, the BBQ was up and the field was a hive of activity. As usual everyone pulled together at the last minute to make another very successful afternoon.

We had about 100 children taking part in the activities and the Punch & Judy went down very well, giving stall holders a well earned breather. I had to pop home at one point and it was very amusing to keep passing children with their butterfly faces, trailing kites.

Thank you to everyone who helped on the day and beforehand, and the cakes were wonderful.
