The Millennium Bachelors Bridge

To celebrate the Millennium, the Friends of Caldy Nature Park commissioned Paul Forster Davies to design and make a new parapet for the Bachelors Bridge, a focal point for the park where the cyclepath crosses the Caldy Brook. Paul worked with schools and groups in the area to get their ideas for what should be included in the design for the bridge. You will find much of the natural wildlife in the park portrayed and various pictures which relate to local organisations. The new bridge links the parishes of Huntington and Boughton Heath and people who lived on both sides of the brook came together for the opening of the bridge on Sunday, 2nd July, 2000.

Hundreds of local residents walked in a procession, banners flying, to reach the bridge in time for the opening. We linked back to the first Millennium and the bridge was revealed by the King at the time, King Ethelred with his wife Emma. We were then able to imagine life in the Year 1000. People had an opportunity to learned how to spin, make braid, bows and arrows, listen to their stories, go on a boar hunt and much more. Some real Vikings from Regia Anglorum were there to practice their fighting skills using genuine swords and dressed in the proper gear. Unfortunately the rain intervened so forcefully that we had to abandon proceedings for the afternoon. We were able to rearrange the event for September when everyone gathered again for our celebrations.
