Trees

When we unveiled the four new sculptures in the park on 30th November 2001, children from Year 6 in Boughton Heath and Huntington Schools shared with us their thoughts about trees. It was good to know that the children share our love of trees.

First, one of the poems that Miss Tierney's Class at Boughton Heath spoke in unison.

Girl and Tree

A girl fell in love with a tree
and a tree with a girl.
Holding the tree in her arms, the girl said
Tree, I love you best in the world.
Why, said the tree,do you love me so ?
Because of the green of your leaves, said the girl.

The girl climbed up into the the tree
and sat on a branch, dangling her legs.
Girl, girl, I love you best, believe me please,
whispered the tree.
Why,said the girl,do you love best me ?
Because of your cherry red dress, said the tree.

Then the wind blew and the tree's green sails
breathed and gasped and filled with air
and the wood of the tree creaked like a ship
and the girl was Captain there.

Only the moon, agog with light,
saw the girl and the tree that night
when the whole town in full pursuit,
came with dogs and searched the woods
where a smiling girl in a cherry tree dress
slept in the arms of a tree, like fruit.

Mrs Bland's Class at Huntington School wrote their own poems about trees. Sadly we only have room for one of them.

The Witch Tree by Juliet Stephenson

An old wrinkly, twisting witch
Her skin inhuman like and covered with warts,
She has many arms and fingers,
Her lovely green hair flies haunting as the wind blows.
But when it becomes colder, her hair turns yellow, brown, red or orange and falls to the floor,
This is when the dance begins,
They hop around in a waltz,
They move back and forth in the rap.

Now the freezing begins,
Her arms and body and skin freezes and turns white,
Then the icicles hang from her arms and fingers.

But that was years ago as she is now a chair in my kitchen,
Or a bedstand in your bedroom.

But maybe, just maybe she is still alive,
With her green hair flying in the wind,
I'd just look around you, and you'll see!
