Art in the Park

In 1997, ten local groups made different 'pictures' to represent the Twelve Days of Christmas and they were hung in trees around the valley.

In 2000, Beth Barlow, Sarah Gallagher and Paul Noon made 3 sculptures for the valley, a Heron Tree, a Mushroom and a Mother & Child. These artists worked in four local schools with the children, using wood, withies and metal sheeting. The children had first hand experience of how an artist develops his work. There were also workshops for local people. 2000 was also the year we unveiled the new Bachelors Bridge designed by Paul Forster Davies

In 2001 we worked again with Chester Festival of Trees. Visitors to Countryside Day who were able to examine examples of all the candidates' work, and the four winning artists made sculptures which were placed in the park. We then had a great day during festival week when the Lord Mayor of Chester, Graham Proctor, with the Lady Mayoress, Sue Proctor, unveiled the four new sculptures. Over 100 children from our four local schools walked round to the four sites, following the fiddler.

The "Door to the Park" by Paul Noon is near the car park; "Poplar Trees" by Robin Chorley is by Bramble Close. "Snail" close to Celandine Close has degenerated to the stage where we have had to convert it to a play installation for children. "Horse" by Sarah Gallagher was placed on Sweet Meadow but unfortunately it has not survived the ravages of time. Thank you everyone who made that particular day a special occasion.

Some of the art works are featured in Chester City Council's Public Art Trail.

Our next major project will be to mark the entrance to the park on Caldy Valley Road. We will have to apply for grants and some of the money we have in the bank will be used for matching funding.
