Countryside Day 2006

Countryside Day 2006 had a bird theme.

The highlight was a flying display of birds of prey. The birds were with us all afternoon, and their trainer Jimmi Hill was on hand to answer all sorts of questions about them. His talk to accompany the display was entertaining and very informative. The birds came from Cheshire Farm Ice Cream at Tattenhall.

As well as the birds of prey there were other 'bird' activities to complement our old favourites.

The RSPB had a stall full of information about local birds and giving us an opportunity to stock up on bird food. Children could make a bird picture, a bird mask and a bird feeder, try their hand at pond dipping and do a bird quiz, run around the nature park on a scavenger hunt and finish off with a hot dog or an ice-cream.

Our activites had disturbed a number of frogs making the most of the damp cut grass in the meadow, and the afternoon was punctuated by the delighted cries of youngsters chasing after the next unsuspecting amphibian.

There was also an opportunity for people to try their hand at boules on a bumpy ad-hoc playing surface. Adding some atmosphere to the occasion, the temperature and sunshine were truly reminiscent of the south of France.
